The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the death of four men in a tanker fire accident which occurred this morning
at Kara bridge by Berger bus stop along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The tanker driver, while on high speed, abruptly applied brake and rammed into a truck carrying beer, resulting to
multiple accident and fire outbreak with colossal loss. Below is a statement issue by the agency yesterday:
The Agency received a distress call at about 3.08am yesterday concerning a tanker fire accident resulting to multiple accident with fatalities at Kara Bridge along Lagos-Ibadan Express Road, outward Lagos
Investigation carried out at the scene of incident revealed that the tanker fully laden with AGO(diesel) 33,000 litres caught fire as the tanker ran into a truck carrying brewery products
(beer) while at high speed. The driver was said to have abruptly applied brake at the Kara Bridge outward Lagos resulting to multiple accident and fire outbreak with colossal loss
The Agency's ERT alongside Lagos State Fire Service,RRS,FRSC,Nigerian Police, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps were responders at the incident scene.The combined team combated the inferno and successfully put out the inferno as well as cordoned Off the Road
in order to Prevent further loss and casualties/ fatalities.
Consequent upon the disaster loss assessment conducted at the incident scene the following
loss were recorded.
- 2 containerised trucks were burnt
- 2 trailers were burnt
-1 tanker with with 33,000litres Diesel which caused the accident was burnt
- 1 car (Toyota Corolla) was burnt
- 3 mortalities(dead bodies) all adult male was recorded
RECOVERY
Recovery operations of accidented burnt truck with the aid of Lasema heavy duty equipment presently ongoing so as to abate traffic gridlock
which has built up on the Lagos Ibadan Express way. Also burnt carcass are also been cleared
off the road so as to restore normalcy. Traffic has affected almost every part of the expressway and Ikorodu road on to Alapere and Ogudu.
The General Manager Lasema,Mr Adesina Tiamiyu advised road users especially articulated truck drivers to avoid overspeeding and adhere to
safety regulations while plying the road so as to forestall avoidable disasters. He further stated that full scale investigation on the incident would be carried out by appropriate authorities at the incident scene.
